Frustrated with clients who seem to frequently make the ‘wrong’ choices for themselves? Strengthen your ability to assist your clients to change problem behaviors such as substance abuse, diabetes, and anger management. This introductory workshop will familiarize you with the spirit, principles and basic techniques of Motivational Interviewing (MI). MI is a client centered, goal directed, guiding style of therapeutic communication developed by Drs. Bill Miller and Steve Rollnick to help people motivate themselves to change problem behavior. MI involves learning to use simple but powerful techniques that help to quickly establish a productive working relationship with clients, allowing them to explore their own motivation, ambivalence, and resistance to change and to efficiently guide them toward more desirable behavior. The effectiveness of MI has been demonstrated in a variety of settings with many different types of clients and is considered to be an “evidence based” practice. Through lecture, interactive exercises, role-play, video, and case examples, you will:
- Learn when to strategically use MI skills
- Learn how to help clients strengthen their commitment to behavior change
- Learn how to use MI with “difficult” client populations
- Understand when to use MI (and when NOT to)
- Learn how to use a range of strategies to “roll with resistance” from your clients
