This course is about adoption, sometimes known as the “A” word, the family secret, or just the topic that is never talked about in front of the adopted child, adoptive parents, or birth parents. It is often a topic that tends to make people feel uncomfortable. According to wikipedia.org, “adoption is a process whereby a person assumes the parenting for another who is not kin and, in so doing, permanently transfers all rights and responsibilities from the original parent or parents. Unlike guardianship or other systems designed for the care of the young, adoption is intended to effect a permanent change in status and as such requires societal recognition, either through legal or religious sanction.” Through discussion and interaction, review of regulations and protocol, participants will delve into the world of foster care and adoptions for youth in care. A review of the process (before, during and after) will be discussed and questions answered. A discussion of what post-adoption services will also be discussed as well as the importance of such information.
