Youth and Young Adult Sexuality
Sexuality and relationships are two of the most important topics for youth and young adults. This course provides an overview of sexuality issues for young people in the child welfare and juvenile justice system and how to work with them effectively. An overview of sexual development in childhood, adolescence and young adult is provided along with youth and young adult sexuality information. Minor consent laws and sexual abuse reporting guidelines are reviewed. Sexuality and relationship issues specific to these populations are discussed including gender roles, pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, coercive sex, sexual identity, and love and intimacy. Sexuality and relationship counseling guidelines with youth and young adults are provided.

Learning Objectives  
  1. To provide an overview of youth and young adult sexuality for participants including sexual development and a review of current statistics.
  2. To review confidentiality and reporting guidelines for providers relevant to youth sexuality and sexual abuse.
  3. To increase understanding of sexuality and relationship issues impacting youth involved in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems.
  4. To provide sexuality and relationship counseling guidelines for working with youth in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems.
