The Department of Health and Human Services describes “the lack of culturally competent providers [as] a significant barrier to quality health care for many LGBT people, particularly those who identify as transgender.” Creating truly inclusive, affirming, and healthy environments for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people requires intentionality and commitment from an entire community/organization/staff. This workshop will present participants with basic concepts, vocabulary, and skills necessary to provide safe and inclusive support to intersex, transgender, and other sex/gender non-conforming clients in foster care and colleagues who support youth in care, specifically by providing safe spaces and challenging the institutional, cultural, and personal beliefs and inequities that lead to a lack of psychological and physical safety for people who are (or are perceived to be) LGBTQI.
