When we are faced with and witness bias, discrimination, and oppression, many people feel overwhelmed and uncertain about what to do. While we often recognize the racism, sexism, heterosexism, etc. perpetrated by others, we are often immobilized by a lack of knowledge of what actions we can take to interrupt the oppression and support positive change. Additionally, we often unaware of our own (implicit/unconscious) bias and are only made aware when others recognize and point out what we have done.

In this workshop, participants will briefly define implicit bias and explore the root of our unconscious discrimination. We will also learn tools to identify implicit bias in ourselves and others and explore ways to make the implicit more explicit, including practical steps we can take to reduce implicit bias. Through activities and large and small group discussion, we will also gain tools, language, and practice in effectively and compassionately interrupting implicit bias, discrimination, and oppression perpetuated by our colleagues and clients.
