This training is designed to focus on depression in African American culture and to explore the demographics of mental illness in African Americans. Culture biases against mental health professionals and health care professionals in general prevent many African Americans from accessing care due to prior experiences with historical misdiagnoses, inadequate treatment and lack of cultural understanding; only 2 percent of psychiatrists, 2 percent of psychologists and 4 percent of social workers in the United States are African American. Mental illness is frequently stigmatized and misunderstood in the African American community.

Objectives
  1. Participants will learn the demographics of depression in African Americans.
  2. Participants will learn how culture plays a role in depression in African Americans.
