The workshop will cover the importance of recognizing the growing needs in counseling diverse groups within a cultural context. An overview on the recent National Standards for Culturally and Linguistic Appropriate (CLAS) Services will be covered. These CLAS Standards are being implemented in order to provide stronger and effective culturally competent services. The workshop will explore ways to strengthen counseling practices to include a multicultural approach. Discussion will explore the impact of unintentional barriers like personal biases, and stereotypes that can affect counseling relationships. Focus will be on ways to recruit and retain diverse groups in counseling and helping services. Finally, strategies and evidence-based models will be presented in order to promote culturally responsive services.
