This workshop explores the world of self-harming behaviors. Self-harming behaviors are used by a variety of clients across age, ethnicity and socioeconomic status. Therefore, it is beneficial for therapists to feel competent in identifying and breaking the cycle of dependence upon self-harming behaviors. Participants will explore the function and delve into how self-harming behaviors provide psychological relief to clients who engage in them. Informed by current research, this workshop will provide direct techniques to assess, respond and provide alternatives skills to teach clients who engage in self-harming behaviors. In addition, this workshop will provide clinicians with guidelines to take care of themselves in and out of the therapy room when working with this population.
