Transformative Justice/Community Accountability models respond to incidents of harm and violence by working for accountability and justice, while also seeking to shift and transform the conditions and misuses of power that perpetuate harm and violence. In this process of working for accountability and transformation we ultimately seek to prevent harm and violence from reoccurring. We are also able to move towards deeper healing for those that have been harmed, and lasting change/transformation for those that have harmed others. These models operate outside of a focus on punishment, and do not rely on criminal legal systems. It is our belief that punishment does not equal or bring about true accountability and justice, and that criminal legal systems are not capable of responding to harm and violence in ways that provide real accountability and justice, or healing and transformation. This course introduces participants to the theory, principles, and practices of Transformative Justice and Community Accountability models. The intention is to offer effective strategies for responding to harm and violence, without relying on systems that are often harmful and violent especially to already marginalized and oppressed communities. This course is interactive, and uses a variety of methods to teach participants concrete strategies and tools that they can then begin implementing into work with system-involved youth.
