Working with the families of youth in care often means working with grandparents and other elderly relatives, especially as the number of people in the US over 60 continues to grow. Therefore, developing knowledge and skills for working with this population is becoming increasingly important. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the pertinent mental and physical health issues often experienced by older adults, how these may affect the involvement of older adults in caring for the foster youth in their lives, and how caregivers of foster youth can deal with these issues in their work.
At the end of this training, participants should be able to:
- Distinguish changes in intellectual, cognitive and memory functioning from those which are a consequence of disease.
- Be better prepared to assist clients who are struggling to understand the physical and/or mental issues that may be affecting their elderly relatives.
- Be able to intervene when seniors, who are guardians of their grandchildren, experience mental status changes, which may negatively affect their ability to care for their grandchildren and for themselves.
- Respect the vulnerability of the aging individual and his/her attempts to manage and overcome their physiological, psychological, and social concerns.
