Foster Care Training

This DSM-5 course is designed to explain how mental health diagnoses are determined and inform work with foster youth who have a mental health diagnoses. In the course participants will learn about the history of mental health diagnoses, how a diagnoses is determined and specifics about DSM-5 diagnoses that are frequently used with youth in foster care with chronic mental illness and substance use disorders. Objectives 1. Participants will be able to discuss and review the organizational structure, changes and new diagnosis in the 5th edition of the Diagnostic Manual of the Mental Disorders. 2. Participants will be able to recognize and discuss the relevance of the DSM 5 to providing services to youth in foster care. 3. Participants will be able to discuss and review the criteria for diagnoses in DSM-5 frequently used with foster youth with chronic mental illness. 4. Participants will be able to apply diagnostic criteria to clinical cases.
