Young people from the child welfare system are adversely impacted by criminal justice issues, regardless of whether they spend time in jail or prison. Whether it’s from having an incarcerated parent, transitioning from foster care with a criminal record, or living in a community that suffers from over-policing, our clients need support and advocacy to deal with these barriers. At this engaging workshop where we’ll learn to address mental and behavioral health challenges, obstacles to independent living, and the effects of oppressive racial profiling and police brutality. With raised awareness, we will then identify effective trauma and healing-informed practices including the development of culturally identity, media literacy, coping and other life skills. We will also cover how juvenile diversion, extended foster care, housing support and political advocacy can aid older systems involved youth. Join us to learn, share resources and examine how to best serve a vulnerable population within an unjust system.
