This training equips child welfare professionals with a comprehensive foundation of knowledge on LGBTQ youth and families and their experiences within the child welfare system. Participants will explore key concepts and terminology, research on LGBTQ families and experiences of LGBTQ youth in foster care, as well as the steps every child welfare professionals can take to welcome and affirm LGBTQ youth and families within the walls of their agencies and beyond.

Objectives:
  • Review current state of affairs regarding gender identity issues.
  • Skills and techniques to effectively work with foster youth in the home and the community.
  • Increase knowledge of key concepts and current terminology used with in the LGBTQ community.
  • An increased awareness of services on that support LGBTQ and allied individuals.
  • A deeper awareness of personal ideas, stereotypes, and assumptions related to LGBTQ community.
