In work with systems involved youth with mental-health diagnoses, service providers must understand the origins and meaning of clients’ diagnoses. In this class, participants will learn about the history of mental-health diagnosing, the definition of a mental-health disorder, and cultural considerations as they impact mental-health diagnoses. DSM-5 diagnoses that are most commonly used with children, adolescents, and young adults will be reviewed in depth. Case vignettes will be used to illustrate diagnoses, and there will be time to discuss cases.
