In work with system involved youth with mental health diagnoses, it is important to understand the origins and meaning of diagnoses in order to most effectively support system involved youth toward improved outcomes. In this class participants will learn about the history of mental health diagnostics, the definition of a mental health diagnosis and cultural considerations as they impact mental health diagnoses. DSM-5 diagnoses that are most commonly used with system involved children, adolescents and young adults will be reviewed in depth. Case vignettes will be used to illustrate diagnoses and there will be time to discuss cases.
