This workshop will examine the importance of understanding and supporting social competence through the use of evidenced-based strategies that harness the therapeutic power of play. Children in the foster care system have often experienced multiple levels of loss, trauma and interrupted socialization due to removal from their family of origin. The negative impact of poor social competence includes: social withdrawal, social isolation, loneliness, social aggression, and bullying. For many children and teens in the foster care system finding the words to articulate the emotional experience of the events in their lives is challenging. Through play-based strategies children can learn specific social skills that are necessary for forming health relationships that form how the child will interact as an adult. The benefit to this population as well as children and teens not in the system is that with improved social competency there is a higher likelihood for personal and professional success throughout their lifetime.
