Participants learn key, clinically relevant concepts from learning theory and the practice of behavioral work to understand how these concepts can be applied to an approach to assessment and to developing strategies for behavior change in children and teens. These concepts include concrete, specific definitions of target behaviors, baseline assessment, functional behavioral analysis, and five levels of intervention strategies. The focus is very much on the problem of supporting children and youth in developing new, adaptive skills that can replace problematic behaviors. Participants will also learn how maladaptive parental responses to children’s behavior (coercive family process) can contribute to the development of childhood anti-social behavior.
