This highly interactive and informative cultural competency training supports service providers in deepening their understanding of gender, with an emphasis on creating affirming spaces within the provider/client dyad and within social service, health, and employment systems, as well as identifying barriers to accessing services for trans and gender expansive (T/GE) youth clients. The mental health impacts of binary-gendered social structures for children, lack of caregiver support, and lack of provider competency will be explored as well as the relationship to systemic harm including bullying, homelessness, substance use, and cycles of abuse. Attendees will share their experiences in small and large groups, explore the clinical, logistical, and legal resources available to assist clients and their families, collaborate on a case study, and leave with resources for further exploration. Participants will develop a set of best practices to support T/GE children, youth, and their families based on completion of an individual self-assessment and communal discussion of available resources.

*Participants will be able to utilize the skills learned in this course:
  1. Participants will be better equipped to respond to trans and gender expansive clients’ articulation of their identities and respond to mental health concerns.
  2. Participants will leave with a set of best practices to support trans and gender expansive youth suited to their professional environment.
