This training will educate providers about the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) community, including terminology, frameworks to understand sexuality and gender (including the biopsychosocial model of gender), pronoun best practices, health disparities, and reviewing laws that protect LGBTQ youth in multiple social systems. Special attention will be paid to the overrepresentation of LGBTQ youth in the foster care system and the dynamics that affect youth health and well-being. Through facilitated discussions, group activities, and video case study, participants will grow their understanding of sexuality, gender, health disparities, laws, and best practices to create a welcoming and inclusive service environment that supports LGBTQ clients and colleagues alike, with a focus on self-compassion and empathy in our learning. Learning objectives satisfy state of California requirements for child welfare worker, resource parents, and licensing personnel LGBTQ trainings under AB 458, the California Foster Care Non-Discrimination Act.
