Community based clinicians play an important support role for families of children with disabilities. This training focuses on how to ensure that families of children with disability and mental health needs receive the supports and accommodations they are entitled to in school settings. We will review how the referral and evaluation process works, how clinicians can participate in that process, review the laws that protect and support students, and consider how to assist families in meaningfully engaging in the SST, IEP and 504 processes, and how to ensure that behaviors related to underlying disability are addressed appropriately. We will cover options for resolving disagreements, compliance violations and discriminatory practices to ensure educational equity for students.
