Kids and teens across the world are struggling to make sense of, and cope with, COVID-19 era changes in private and public life. System-involved children and teens on the autism spectrum are likely to have distinct kinds of challenges, and be in need of particular kinds of support, to stay balanced and regulated during the time of COVID-19. This workshop will help child welfare professionals recognize why their clients on the autism spectrum may face particular difficulties during this time. We will practice conversations with youth on the autism spectrum about COVID-19, and we will highlight strategies to help youth cope as well as possible with this major unexpected international event. We will discuss treatment planning and utilize vignettes as examples.
