The goal of this presentation is to describe Seeking Safety as it is implemented for adolescents. Seeking Safety is a practice to address trauma and/or substance abuse which includes practicing present-focused coping skills to help youth attain safety in their lives. It is highly flexible and can be conducted with a wide range of youth, service providers, and settings. There are 25 topics, each representing a safe coping skill relevant to both trauma and/or substance abuse, such as “Asking for Help”, “Creating Meaning”, “Compassion”, and “Healing from Anger”. Seeking Safety strives to increase hope through emphasis on ideals; it offers exercises, emotionally-evocative language, and quotations to engage youth; attends to service provider processes; and provides concrete strategies to build recovery skills. We cover many ways to make Seeking Safety engaging for this age group (e.g., games and exercises), responding to challenging adolescents and families or caretakers, using effective language, and working with juvenile justice-involved individuals.
