Today’s hate-filled, divisive political atmosphere has produced heightened intrapsychic and socio-historic toxicity marked by increased violence, fear, anxiety, hypervigilance and a myriad of group dispiritment and national disequilibrium.

Storytelling illumines the marginalized voice and agency of individuals and communities in the service of undoing internalized shame, while concurrently examining the structural inequities that gave rise to its existence. Storytelling for transformation is an application of expressive arts strategies and as such is understood to be a praxis of social justice and liberty pedagogy.

In this two-day creativity-based training, we will explore storytelling as a basis for the examination of self, society and notions of creativity as trauma informed practices to transgress inequities and foster justice within youth and families. We will examine hatred, white supremacy syndrome, kyriarchy… and their negative impact. We will also examine hope and joy as parts of the uncover/discover/recover and inspire process.

The training will include lecture, demonstration, experiential activities with direct and indirect professional applications. Participants do not need to have any training in any of the expressive arts to be fully engaged in this process.
