Everyone is impacted by the system of racism, and therefore has to tenaciously walk against that system. Individuals are both impacted by structural inequality, though the costs and consequences are significantly different for families with marginalized identities, and our awareness of the system usually also differs greatly. There has been much debate about the issue of race neutrality recently, with some calling for the elimination of race-conscious policies in favor of race-neutral policies. Because privilege can often go unseen or unexamined, there are ways in which it impacts the development and implementation of policies, procedures, etc. that can reinforce discrimination and undermine equity for youth and families. This training will review the impact of (seemingly) race-neutral policies on youth in foster care and strategies for addressing inequities that result from these policies.
