“Through the analysis of culturally-sensitive play strategies, this workshop aims to expand the therapist’s multicultural understanding of migrant and refugee to minimize cultural misunderstandings, guide an accurate assessment process, and establish a strong rapport that lays a solid foundation for the therapeutic work ahead. The presenter will define immigration-related terminology as well as address the handling of socio-political and historical factors, acculturation, cultural traditions and values, language barriers, code-switching abilities, and ethnic identity as holding the potential to enhance or hinder the therapeutic relationship in each of the play components (i.e., intake, pre-treatment assessment, introduction session, tentative acceptance, and negative reaction, as well during the growing/working and termination phases). Participants will engage in activities that address cultural assumptions and biases and explore culturally sensitive play interventions and activities from an integrative framework that can be utilized with clients with limited English skills. Additionally, the benefits and challenges of interpretation and translation services will be discussed.”
