Although Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been found, through rigorous research, to have the most evidence for effectively treating childhood depression, many practitioners have found that it does not necessarily translate from the research lab to the real world conditions that they face in community-based settings. Often, children and youth have multiple presenting problems and complex backgrounds and needs that require a more flexible approach. This training will present an overview of the theory behind CBT and what is CBT. We will cover the importance of the transdiagnostic approach to treating children and youth, where underlying core processes are identified and targeted, in order to more effectively support children and youth with co-morbid conditions, such as anxiety and trauma. We will discuss safety planning, changing conditions, affect regulation, social skills and family strategies from a CBT theory lens. This training throughout will focus on understanding depression and co-morbid conditions with depression (such as trauma) in children and youth from a CBT lens.
