This training is designed for caregivers and professionals working with foster youth who have been exposed to child abuse. The presenter will review and define Child Abuse and neglect, identify risk factors, and review lasting effects that child abuse leaves on the brain. The presenter will review the various types of abuse and its lasting effects on children, families and communities. Consequences may be mild or severe; disappear after a short period or last a lifetime; and affect the child’s physically, psychologically, behaviorally, or in some combination of all three ways. Physical consequences, such as damage to a child’s growing brain, can have psychological implications, such as cognitive delays or emotional difficulties.
- Participants will be able to identify the different areas of the brain that are affected by child abuse.
- Participants will be able to demonstrate knowledge of intervention strategies for working with children with trauma histories.
- Participants will be able to identify behaviors often associated with victims of child abuse.
