This training is for all service providers who work with system involved youth and families. Children may respond to loss, including death of a loved one or change in routine, in a wide variety of ways. These changes in behavior can easily be misidentified, which can result in the child not receiving the support they may be seeking. In this presentation we will describe a quick overview of Piaget and Erickson’s developmental theories and review how children at different developmental stages may understand death and what their grief may look like. By building an understanding of how to identify different behaviors as possible grief reactions, participants will learn how to better support the children with which they work. Grief is a central theme in the lives of system involved youth whether it be due to death or transition in living situations. This training aims to better prepare providers to mitigate the effects of the grief in the lives of these youth.
