The purpose of this training is to help participants who work with seriously emotionally disturbed youth understand the legal and clinical intent of the Lanternman-Petris-Short Act and the 5150 process, which allows for involuntary confinement and psychiatric evaluations for mentally ill minors who pose a danger to themselves or to others and who are refusing psychiatric treatment. This training will emphasize the fact that submitting a client to a 5150 hold denies that client some of his or her rights and discuss the impact the process can have on the client. Participants in this training will also learn how to de-escalate youth in crisis and reserve the use of the 5150 process for true emergencies.
