This highly interactive and experiential training focuses on an approach to family engagement and support strategies. This training will help providers understand in collaborative models for engaging and working with caregivers around their perceptions of youth in care. Dr. Finn will review how to incorporate principles of youth-centered and family-centered frameworks in a model that engages parents and youth in understanding and discussing youth struggles and strengths. The goal of this type of assessment is to enlist caregivers as collaborators in order to gain perspective and answer questions about the child’s difficulties. This collaborative process will clarify how the youth’s relationship with caregiver can improve in order to better support him/her. In this training, videos will be utilized to demonstrate the process.

Session One helps the participants understand strategies for engaging the caregivers, developing questions with the caregiver and fostering curiosity, helping the provider orient to a brief model. Session two will review the role of the provider in guiding the caregiver through the process of understanding youth in their care. The third training day will focus on gathering history and background to inform the questions caregivers have about their youth. The final two trainings will explore strategies to help parents shift problematic understandings of youth and strategies for feedback to the family.
