This course will provide general descriptions of current terminology relevant to sexual orientation and gender identity expression.
  • Myths and stereotypes about LGBTQ and GNC youth
  • Age appropriate engagement strategies to assess gender and sexual orientation with youth.
  • Intersectionality and cultural considerations when discussing gender identity and sexual orientation with youth, caregivers, and other important adults.
  • Ways to help youth understand and navigate the reactions of peers, family, and other important people to their identity
  • Basic understanding of barriers in different systems that deter youth and families from accessing needed services.
  • Current laws and additional resources
LGBTQ children are overrepresented in the foster care system due to rejection from their families of origin and then linger in foster care. In order to provide culturally relevant mental health services it is important to learn the current language of identity and ways to address SOGIE issues with youth.
