Children may respond to loss, including death of a loved one or change in routine, in a wide variety of ways. These changes in behavior can easily be misidentified, which can result in the child not receiving the support they may be seeking. In this presentation we will review how children at different developmental stages may understand death and what their grief may look like. We will also offer helpful suggestions of how to best support children when they experience loss. By building an understanding of how to identify different behaviors as possible grief reactions, participants will learn how to better support the children they work with. Grief is a central theme in the lives of system involved youth whether it be due to death or transition in living situations.

This training aims to better prepare providers to mitigate the effects of the grief in the lives of these youth. This training also aims at helping bereaved caregivers, and adults including teachers, coaches, parents, extended family have the tools they need to communicate with children about loss, identify how they are impacted by their own grief and how to open up healthy lines of communication and intervention within the family or community impacted.

NOTE: This training is an updated and extended version of previous trainings we have offered this year Developmental Stages of Grief in Children & Working With Grieving Children. Some of the content is similar, but we have taken your feedback and created more space for learning about more concrete ways that you can engage with youth in conversations about grief.
