This workshop helps caregivers talk to youth, of any age, about who they are and how to make personal good choices. Healthy sexuality is much more than sexual contact; in fact you can have very healthy sexuality and never have sexual contact! It focuses on the 5 Circles of Healthy Sexuality, which include: Sensuality, Intimacy, Relationship Identity, Health and Reproduction, and Sexualization. The concept of Consent is woven through each circle and relates to children of every age. Asking children if they want to hold hands or be tickled is a great way for them to understand and practice bodily autonomy. A lack of bodily autonomy is correlated with early unwanted pregnancy and perpetuation of sexual abuse and trafficking.

Underneath the decisions people make are their values. While we cannot instill our values on other people, we can help them to develop and define their own values. When youth make decisions, a caregiver can ask if the outcome was in line with their personal values. If the answer is “yes” then great! If not, the caregiver can help the youth determine other ways to think about their situation and become more aware of how to keep their values in the forefront when making big life decision like having sex or dressing a certain way.
