As we think about the role of technology in our lives as providers, one of its predominant features is that it is always on. Our devices are available 24/7, putting us one tap away from a world of distraction, one ping away from a request, one email away from a responsibility all the time. Sometimes we are allowed to turn them off, sometimes we are required to have them on- but how do they impact us? How do we create and exercise healthy boundaries in relationship to the demands of our work, particularly when they are magnified by our availability via digital technology, and the implicit values of a technological world? What do we actually know about benefits and detriments of our personal relationship with technology, as care providers, on our own wellbeing, and on our ability to provide excellent care to our clients? In this training, we’ll refract explorations of self-care through this lens of our personal relationships with technology, and explore what it’s like to seek restoration in an instant gratification, always-on world.
