Western approaches to mental and physical health care often fail to effectively treat ethnic minorities and underrepresented populations. This is especially true for clients from Mesoamerican cultures, whose spiritual values are often ignored by well-meaning but culturally insensitive doctors, psychotherapists, psychologists, foster care staff and social workers.
