What Adopted Children (And Their Parents) Need to Know at Various Ages and Stages: At each stage of development, new understandings will become possible for both adopted children and their parents. Therapists and other professionals will need to identify interventions that support parents in meeting the evolving needs of their adopted child. Babies making a transition from one family to another makes attachment a sensitive issue throughout life.
  • Ages 2-5 years old Preschoolers are very concrete thinkers. They are just beginning to learn about things like “same and different” and are beginning to apply their new ideas and understandings to everything, including friends and family.
  • Ages 6-9 years old Children at this age see themselves in terms of what they can do, and begin to compare themselves to their peers. Children at this age use their developing conceptual skills to figure out how and why adoption happened to them.
  • Ages 10-12 years old A tweens job is to figure out who he or she is in the world. This often raises raise adoption, genetic, racial and heritage issues/questions that they will begin to explore on deeper level than ever before.
  • 13-17 years old A parent’s most difficult task is to create a delicate balance of “to love and let go” as their children work toward creating their own individual identity.
Lifespan Adoption Issues for All Triad Members: Recent studies indicate that therapists and social workers rarely receive any formal education, training or supervision on how to best engage, assess, support and treat members of the adoption triad – adopted people, adoptive parents and first/birth parents. This two-hour introductory CEU course will provide helping professionals with tools and best practices to use when providing services to all members of the adoption triad, across their lifespan. Participants will learn about some of the common presenting themes in therapy, as well as strategies and approaches to treatment.
