This training will explore the many facets of ending clinical services with youth and families, especially those who have experienced attachment disruption. We will discuss the reasons for ending services and the potential for reparative experiences, as well as minimizing further harm, in working with youth and caregivers who have experienced trauma and/or have been involved with Children and Family Services. In this context, we will explore planned and unplanned endings with the youth and families served. We will review and explore feelings and reactions that influence the quality of the ending that generate not only from the youth and caregivers, but also from the service providers, including anxiety, overwhelm, relief, hesitation, disappointment and pride. We will also explore factors that impact planned endings, including the developmental and chronological age of the youth along with the sociocultural experience of loss and how this intersects with the youth’s and caregiver’s experience. We will review referral resources and intervention ideas around endings to provide clinicians with practical tools they can implement during endings.
