Deciding to become a foster and or adoptive parent is a big step. Understanding the components of foster care and adoption is crucial to understanding if this is a right path for you. The Treatment Foster Care Training Series will help participants understand what fostering and adopting is all about. This process furnishes you with information about the youth who come into the foster care system. The classes also boost your knowledge and confidence to meet the challenge of taking youth into your home and to be sure you are ready to follow through on the commitment.

This class will discuss a variety of strategies and treatment planning methods to use with foster youth. The 3-5-7 Model of Grief and Loss by Darla Henry will be overviewed and why it may positively impact foster youth will be looked at. In addition, the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) assessment tool by Dr. John Lyons will be looked at and how it can be used to make attainable and measurable goals that can overtime improve the quality of life for youth in case. This training will also cover the effects of abuse on youth, supporting relationships between the youth and family, working with the youth on letting them explore their individual identity so that they can live a more complete and meaningful life even if in foster care. In addition, the topic of permanency and what that means for various foster youth sill be discussed.
