This training is designed to assist caseworkers, support counselors and foster parents with their awareness and comfort level of working with children & youth who may exhibit difficult or challenging behaviors. During this course Power Point Presentation and videos of children with behavioral issues pose as examples for discussion. Presenter promotes dialog of interpretation of scenario on videos (child’s behavior/presentation) and how to handle crisis situations by using effective de-escalation techniques. Presenter reviews key elements of behavior modification and de-escalation.

Objectives:
  1. Describe and demonstrate, in small group, creative problem-solving techniques/practices to manage challenging behaviors by understanding the nature of the child’s explosive/ mal-adaptive behaviors.
  2. Plan to prevent potential challenging situations with a child or teen through creative problem solving and de-escalation that reduces risk of harm to children and adults.
  3. Demonstrate understanding that there is no “one” solution to de-escalation and demonstrate creative problem solving as a techniques for those who serve foster youth themselves.
  4. Be able to process challenging events with children and teens to increase the youth’s toolbox of coping strategies.
